Counsel

We offer advocacy, counseling, and support services for survivors of domestic violence and their children who do not require immediate shelter, with appointments available by phone.

Shelter

We operate a 136-bed emergency shelter, offering a safe haven with 45,618 shelter nights provided in the past year, for survivors of domestic violence and their children who are no longer safe in their homes.

Advocacy

We’re committed to empowering survivors of domestic violence by creating a safe environment that fosters recovery, awareness of domestic violence dynamics, and the development of independence and self-sufficiency.

Our Services

24-HOUR CRISIS HOTLINE

Women In Distress operates a 24-hour crisis hotline (954-761-1133) (711) that provides crisis intervention, advocacy services, counseling and information on domestic violence. Last year, the crisis hotline answered a total of 12,301 calls and provided survivors and the community with critical services.

Emergency Shelter

Our families at the emergency shelter receive services including housing, crisis intervention, therapy, advocacy assistance, and food, clothing, and household supplies as needed. We’re committed to serving all individuals living in unsafe situations because of domestic violence including those with special needs.

Counseling & Therapy Sessions

Individual therapies, as well as, therapeutic support groups are available for survivors of domestic violence and their children, including infants in both the Emergency Shelter and Outreach Programs.

Children Support Services

Women In Distress has child therapists that provide family therapy for infants and clinical one-on-one therapy services for children based on their development from infants to age 17, utilizing evidence-based methods and trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy.

Pet Shelter

Women In Distress, through a unique partnership with the Humane Society of Broward County, is the only South Florida domestic abuse certified facility with an approved Pet Shelter. This unique partnership allows us to ensure survivors’ pets (dogs and cats) receive proper nutrition, physical exams, and vaccines.

Injunction for Protection

If you have been harmed or threatened with physical violence or stalked, we can help. We recognize that taking legal action against an abuser is an important step in keeping survivors safe. Obtaining an attorney, however, can have a huge financial burden. The Injunction for Protection Project (IFP) eliminates barriers to securing legal protection against an abuser.

Domestic violence safety planning involves proactive measures and strategies to enhance the safety and well-being of survivors, enabling them to navigate and mitigate potential risks associated with abusive situations.

Therapeutic Services

We offer survivor-centered counseling services, including individual therapy and therapeutic support groups, for domestic violence survivors and their children, with a focus on empowerment, and are available in both the Emergency Shelter and Outreach Programs.

Education and Prevention

The Education and Prevention team at Women In Distress is committed to providing quality prevention education and resources to all members of the community in order to create a violence-free world where love doesn’t hurt and everyone feels the safety they deserve.
